Studies have shown that anxiety and depression are 1.5 to 2.4 times more common in people with asthma than people without asthma. In people with Severe Asthma, this link is even stronger. Alongside poor asthma control, mental health issues like depression and anxiety can greatly contribute to impairing the quality of life amongst people with asthma. Some risk factors associated with poorer asthma outcomes amongst people with asthma and mental health concerns include smoking, poor self-management, reduced treatment adherence or overuse of medication, low physical activity, fear in response to asthma symptoms, and negative thoughts and emotions. Guest Speaker: Dr. Kim Lavoie, Full Professor, Chair of Behavioral Medicine and FRQS Chercheur-Boursier Senior, Department of Psychology, UQAM
Dr. Lavoie’s work focuses on research in three areas: (1) the impact of psychological stress (e.g., depression, anxiety) and lifestyle factors (diet, exercise, smoking, adherence) on the development and progression of chronic illnesses (e.g., cardiovascular disease, asthma, COPD, obesity); (2) psychophysiological and behavioral mechanisms linking psychological stress to disease; and (3) behavioural medicine (e.g., behavioral interventions for chronic illnesses, including motivational communication and cognitive-behavioral therapy).
